Medical Extended Reality (MedXR) Regulatory Science of Patient Facing Applications (PFA)
Overview
The MedXR Patient‑Facing Applications (PFA) Project brings together innovators, regulators, clinicians, and technical experts to advance safe, effective, and scalable XR technologies used directly by patients or in patient‑facing care workflows.
Our Goal
The goal is to close evaluation gaps across design, evidence generation, deployment, and market access while supporting a consistent, patient‑centered approach to XR development.
What We’re Building
Good Practices Handbook (Launching 2026)
A practical guide covering:
- Product lifecycle design
- Evidence development and regulatory alignment
- Deployment and fleet management
- Market access and adoption
- Forward‑looking considerations including AI‑enabled XR
MedXR Education Series
A 5+ session online series (beginning in 2026) co‑developed with community experts and FDA, covering:
- Product Design for XR
- Evidence Development for XR
- Fleet Management & Deployment
- Clinical Adoption & Provider Engagement
- XR Infrastructure & Hospital Integration
Case Examples & Innovators Circles
Real‑world lessons, deployment insights, and community discussions that support the Handbook and accelerate responsible adoption.
Are you interested in participating in the MedXR Patient-Facing Applications Initiative?
Participants gain the opportunity to shape national‑level guidance, contribute technical insights, and collaborate with FDA, VA, NIH, clinicians, and peers across the XR ecosystem.
The MedXR PFA project creates a neutral, pre‑competitive space to compare strategies in design, evidence, and deployment all to help the field overcome adoption barriers and build patient‑centered XR solutions that are reliable, safe, and scalable.
