Modernizing Recall Notifications: Safe Space Digital Practices
Modernizing Recall Communication for Today’s Digital Environment
MDIC is pleased to announce the release of the Pilot Study Report on Modernizing Recall Notifications—a pivotal step forward in modernizing how medical device recalls are communicated in today’s digital environment. This groundbreaking report is the result of the Safe Space Community of Practice, part of MDIC’s Advancing Quality Excellence Collaborative Community (AQEcc)*, a collaborative effort focused on driving innovation and improving patient safety through more efficient and effective ways to deliver recall information.
*Formerly known as the Case for Quality Collaborative Community
The pilot study set out with a bold objective: to streamline medical device recall notifications using digital communication methods that are more consistent, efficient, and secure. Today’s recall process often suffers from inconsistent communication, cybersecurity concerns and inefficient response chains. This pilot addresses those pain points head-on with digital tools designed to simplify and standardize notifications, improve traceability and accountability, and enhance patient safety.
By addressing long-standing challenges in the traditional recall process, the project aims to enhance patient safety while reducing burdens on manufacturers and healthcare providers.
Key insights from the pilot include:
- Digital notifications achieved a 78% response rate, compared to 43% through traditional mail.
- The average response time decreased from over 30 days to under 5 days.
- Providers and manufacturers praised the digital template for its clarity and usability.
- Suggested practices were developed, including standardized templates to guide future recall efforts.
This pilot was deeply enriched by the diverse perspectives of stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem. Input from a wider range of voices—spanning manufacturers, providers, regulators, and experts—ensured that the approach was practical and inclusive. By bringing these perspectives together, the pilot charted a forward-thinking path in digital health communication.
What’s Next?
With the success of this pilot, the Safe Space initiative now encourages wider adoption of digital recall practices across the industry. The findings provide a blueprint for a more reliable and resilient system—one that puts patient well-being front and center.
