HEPV Patient Perspective Research (PPR) Program

Overview

The HEPV PPR program enhances the understanding and use of patient perspective data in reimbursement decisions, health technology assessments, and policymaking. FDA, CMS, private insurance providers, health technology assessment organizations, patient advocacy groups, and other policy stakeholders collaborate on this work.

The PPR Working Group

Established in 2020, the PPR Working Group oversees activities, including determining priorities, sharing expectations, managing the work, and identifying opportunities. Barry Liden, JD, Vice President of Patient Engagement at Edwards Lifesciences, chairs the PPR Working Group.

Interviews with Stakeholders

A series of confidential interviews with commercial payers and health technology assessment organizations:

Provided insights on if and how they use patient preference information in evidence and coverage recommendations
Identified gaps in the understanding by commercial payers and health technology assessment organizations of patient perspective information and opportunities for education and communication.

Meetings and Workshops with Stakeholders

The PPR Working Group held meetings and workshops with CMS staff, payers, and health technology assessment organizations to:

Educate stakeholders about the work being done to enhance the understanding and use of data on patient perspectives in health technology assessments and policymaking
Solicit input on needs for patient perspective information and suggestions for future work.
